Learning Activities
The learning activities translate the laboratory architecture into practical student tasks based on telecommunications installation practices.
Rather than interacting directly with the PBX configuration, students work primarily with the physical infrastructure: installing, terminating, distributing, testing, and verifying telecommunications circuits.
The supporting PBX and network infrastructure provide the services required to make these installations operational.
Learning Sequence
The current laboratory sequence includes three core activities.
Structured Cabling and Telephony Distribution
Students work with telecommunications distribution infrastructure and develop the physical pathway required to deliver telephone service through the laboratory.
Customer Premises Infrastructure
Students construct and terminate the customer-premises portion of the installation, including the telecommunications outlets and associated cabling.
The activity integrates analog telephony infrastructure with network cabling, allowing the student work area to support both analog and network services.
Aerial Drop and Network Interface
Students reproduce the final portion of the service path between the simulated outside plant and the customer premises.
The activity introduces the aerial drop and Network Interface Device (NID), completing the end-to-end representation of the analog telephone service path.
Functional Verification
An important element of the laboratory methodology is that the student installation produces an observable functional result.
After completing the required infrastructure, students can verify the installed analog circuit by placing calls through the laboratory PBX.
Preconfigured SIP/VoIP phones provide an additional endpoint that allows communication between the IP network and the student-installed analog telephone line.
This creates a direct relationship between the physical installation task and the operational telecommunications service.
Optional Activities
Additional activities can be incorporated without changing the core laboratory sequence.
These activities may extend the learning environment to related telecommunications technologies or provide additional exploration of the supporting infrastructure.
